Hawaii

DEC 1 – 5

Our tale begins on December 1st at 6:30am at the Logan Airport in Boston. At this time, I was waiting in line to check my bag and looking a little paler than usual, possibly because of the early hour, but more likely because I was feeling the usual symptoms of… err… let’s just call it post-jolly juice, shall we?

Anyway, I met up with my cousin Meghan, who lives in Melbourne and very kindly offered me the extra room in the apartment she shares with her boyfriend, which made this entire trip possible.

After an extremely enjoyable flight on Hawaiian Airlines (for real, the nicest flight attendants and SO MUCH included food! Like 3 courses worth and chocolate galore) we landed in Honolulu!

We then waited at baggage claim until the belt stopped, only for my bag to never appear. After a quick chat with my new friends at the baggage claim counter (one of whom had never been told a zipcode with a zero at the front of it), it turned out someone had taken my bag by mistake!

Don’t fret too much, I ended up getting it back later that same night, so I was not in crisis mode for long. Though I was in my stinky travel sweatpants and t-shirt for much longer than I wanted to be.

Anyway, less whining, more fun stuff!

I wish I could eat at The Sunrise Shack every day! This was my first ever smoothie bowl and it tasted like creamy, fruity heaven.

We went to the Honolulu Zoo and aquarium, but I didn’t get any good fish pictures and the monk seal wouldn’t pose for me. Here is Rafiki’s cousin and Marty’s uncle though!

We TRIED to hike the Manoa Trail but it was closed for clearing or something stupid like that. We found a different hike which was attached to a some sort of tree garden (?) and hiked that instead. I say hiked, but it was more like a short muddy walk to what was supposed to be a waterfall, but actually turned out to be more of a “fast trickle” as Meghan dubbed it. On our way back down we found the welcome attendant for the tree garden sobbing, but when we asked him what was wrong he said he wanted to be left alone. Immediately after that it started to downpour. At this point we gave up on our outdoor excursions and took and Uber to the Maui Brewery where we proceeded to buy a few pints and many stickers.

We returned to our hotel room that night to find this note. My bed was so messy with all of my belongings the cleaning lady felt the need to apologize for not being able to make it for me. I’ve never had someone apologize to me because of a mess I’ve made before.

Meg and I signed up for a tour of the island (Oahu) which turned out to be made up of stops at lookouts and tourist trap gift shop things. The name of the tour bus driver was Chief and he brought donuts made with taro flour (which turned them purple) so he instantly became on of my favorite people. I meant to take a picture of the purple donuts, but I ate mine too quickly. In the afternoon we stopped at Fumi’s for lunch. It was good fried food, but I guess it is famous on the island. Also, everyone carves things into the leaves of the trees where the seating area is!

The coolest thing we got to do was go snorkeling with Sea Turtles!!! The only bummer about that was I didn’t see any…! The dumb kid who stepped on dog poop earlier in the day and tracked it onto the bus was the only person who got to see one. Apparently we didn’t get to go to the usual snorkeling spot because it was hammer head shark mating season… so there’s that.

That night, Meg and I enjoyed a divey bar called Arnold’s Beach Bar (which was not on the beach) and a slice of pizza from Slice of Waikiki Pizza. I definitely recommend the pizza place, they braided the crusts! We also went to this underground collection of Japanese restaurants. Honestly, I had enough jolly juice at Arnold’s Beach Bar to partially wipe my memory of where it is, but I have pictures of the mini arcade games and a fun neon ramen sign!

We were supposed to leave on December 4th but after receiving an email saying that our flight was delayed a day because of an ENGINE MALFUNCTION, we had another day of activities instead! The one thing left on both of our lists was to hike Diamond Head, the crater of a volcano and a former army lookout. If you take anything away from this post, let it be that you go and hike Diamond Head if you are anywhere near it. It was so fun! It was really what I would categorize as a “hike,” but being able to climb through all the old military stairways and tunnels was really cool.

On our last night we decided to do something really special which also helped us get out our frustration over our delayed plans (which we were honestly not too frustrated about). We found a place called Blade & Timber that let us throw axes! Yes mom, you read correctly, throwing axes. Unfortunately WordPress won’t let me upload the video of when I threw a BULLSEYE. So just imagine how cool it was and you’re probably close. Also Uber Eats REALLY messed up our pizza order so I decided to share my little homemade meme instead.

Sitting in the airport on the day we left I watched my Spotify year in review and my Artist of the Decade is The Killers. This has nothing to to with my trip, but now you know so enjoy.

I have now been in Melbourne since December 6th, so I promise there will be more posts to come. Stay tuned!

Much love, Syd

Vegemite

Okay, I’ve decided to stop naming all of these posts after the places that I am in because you will end up with a long and confusing list of Melbournes. ALSO, I have been too lazy to keep up with what I’ve been doing so I am very behind and in order to deal with that I’m going to pick up with the present time and fill in the past… later… hopefully… I’ll do it!… I think.

After having a lovely and lazy Christmas spent eating pancakes, opening some vegemite themed gifts, and watching the classic Christmas movies, we decided to drive the Great Ocean Road!

This is the itinerary Madan sent both Meg and I the night before:

After “breakky” in Port Campbell we went to see The 12 Apostles and The Loch Ard Gorge. It was SO beautiful and it looked as if the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland had a baby with the southern coast of Portugal.

There were signs everywhere warning people about the venomous snakes, but I have a theory that they just didn’t want people hopping the fences and plunging to their deaths. Oh my god, the amount of people at these lookouts was bordering on insane, it was so packed it was difficult to walk around. Thanks to my ability to elbow my way through people and hurdle over small children, I was able to take these pictures and give the illusion that I had the view all to myself, when in reality I was being crushed against the railing by a horde of zombie tourists.

The next picture is my favorite because it is of the first koala I have ever seen in real life. Yes, it is blurry, no, I don’t care.

This was at Kennet River which is just normal place where people live, except there are WILD KOALAS living in the trees! We saw two more on this road and now my life goal is to buy a house on that road so I can stare at koalas all day long.

In the next picture you can see part of the Great Ocean Road winding around the base of the mountain. This whole section that we drove reminded me of the tour we took around Oahu.

Here’s a picture of me at the lookout just in case my mom has forgotten what I look like and needs some reminding. Now that I think of it, I’ll add in the selfie I tried to take of me, Madan, and Meghan all staring into the sun while at the 12 Apostles.

After that we went to see a waterfall and ended up lost in the woods while frantically on the lookout for any sign of snakes or giant spiders.

This is me and Madan doing some ballet and/or stretching to prepare to race up the stairs from the bottom of the waterfall. Neither of us made it the whole way. Or even halfway.

We made it back home in time to order Indian food and play a game of CATAN! I won. (After having lost the last two games).

That’s all for now folks! Hopefully by my next post I’ll have actually set foot in the ocean.

Much love,

Syd

Melbourne

DAY 6 – 7

You can blame the internet and technology in general for the delay in this blog update! I had almost finished this post when it decided to disappear, cue my tears.

After an 11 hour flight, Meg and I landed in Melbourne, Australia on December 6th. The jet lag wasn’t bad because this city has a 21 hour time difference from Honolulu, but we lost an entire day because of it. When we made it back to the apartment, Madan was there to welcome us with pizza! Two “size large” pizzas which looked more like personal pizzas to me.

The next day we went to the South Melbourne Market and made our first stop at Padre coffee for a caffeine hit. By the way, Melbourne is obsessed with coffee, not coffee actually, ESPRESSO. The people in this city can’t get enough of it, there are cafes everywhere you turn. I’m pretty sure Melbournians have espresso instead of blood running through their veins. I’m not complaining about this, I feel like I have finally found my people! Fellow caffeine addicts unite!

The South Melbourne Market is huge and the few pictures I took don’t do it justice at all. It has entire produce sections (yes, that sign in the picture of arugula says “roquette” because Australians think they are French. They also say serviette instead of napkin. Weirdos.), entire sections for clothing and home shopping, gardening sections, and many many pastry shops. We picked up an apple pie and a couple croissants before making out way to the food court area. There was a stand with Turkish food and I ordered something that was supposed to have sweet potato in it, but they were all out so I got something with spinach instead. The woman kept emphasizing that I should get the spinach one because it is vegan, I’m not vegan but it was delicious.

We then walked to Flinders Street Station so that I could get a Myki card so that I could take the trams.

After purchasing my Myki we took a tram to meet some of Madan and Meghan’s friends at a brewery. This was my first experience at an Australian brewery, but it definitely has not been my last. Meghan and Madan are obsessed with “capturing Pokémon” which is what they call finding new beers to taste at breweries and uploading them on the Untapped app. This brewery was called Moon Dog and it was the most hipster looking place I have ever been in. Notice in one of the pictures the sign that says “espresso martini $15”, even at a beer brewery there is still access to caffeine.

After the brewery we went to a rooftop restaurant and bar called Naked for Satan where I had my first espresso martini! After the rooftop we went to the taco place next door. I think the name of this place was actually “Tacos” because that is all it said on the sign above the door. I ate a couple tacos as Freddie Mercury gazed at me lovingly from a plate on the wall.

Stay tuned for the following days adventure, where we go through a stinky hedge maze and Meg befriends some cows!
